NYCOMM / SiliCOMM

The Department of Communication is offering a 1 -credit industry seminar which culminate with a series of meetings and workshops with working alumni in both NYC and the Silicon Valley. The seminar will meet for seven weekly classes in preparation for the industry visits. Each city offers a different experience and opportunity to interact with our amazing alumni. During the trips, students will tour leading media, public relations, news, and tech firms while interacting with some of the top leaders of each field, who just happen to be Cornell alumni. 

Please review the information below to gain a better understanding of each trip. Students are responsible for some of the cost of each trip but that amount varies based on the city.

New York City:

  • The trip will be the Sunday, October 14th, through Tuesday, October 16th.
  • Leave for NYC on Sunday morning and return late Tuesday night. (You will miss two days of classes.)

  • Alumni Reception at the Cornell Club NYC on Monday, October 15th
  • Transportation to and from NYC will be provided.
  • Hotel accommodations will be provided. (Two students per room.)
  • Lunch on Monday, reception Monday night, and lunch on Tuesday will be provided.
  • Students are responsible for lunch on Sunday, breakfast Monday and Tuesday, dinner on Tuesday night, and subway passes.
  • 11 students will be selected to attend
  • Potential site visits include: NBCUniversal, MBooth, SocialCode, Nintendo
  • Students must enroll in COMM 4950 for 1-credit during the first 7-weeks of fall 2018. This provides an opportunity to research the companies and people that we meet during our trip.

Silicon Valley:

  • The Trip will be Tuesday, January 8th through Friday, January 11th.
  • Very Important: This trip happens during the winter break, students will be responsible for getting to and from Silicon Valley on their own. All students must be in the Bay Area by Tuesday, January 8th at 6pm. Students will be free to leave anytime on Friday.
  • Transportation to and from site visits will be provided.   
  • Hotel accommodations will be provided. (Two students per room.)
  • Lunches Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday will be provided. One dinner will be provided.
  • Students will be responsible for all breakfasts and three dinners.
  • 11 students will be selected to attend
  • Potential site visits include: Facebook, Google, Apple, Pinterest, as well as smaller tech start-ups. 
  • Alumni reception: TBD.
  • Students must enroll in COMM 4951 for 1-credit during the second 7-weeks of Fall 2018. This provides an opportunity to research the companies and people that we meet during our trip.

Application notes:

  • To apply, students must have been on-campus for at least one semester.
  • Students who have attended NYCOMM or LACOMM before are not eligible at this time.
  • Stronger consideration will be given to those students with an overall 3.0 GPA or higher. Preference will be given to students who have little or no Communication-related work experience in NYC or Silicon Valley. 
  • Students will have to explain of their reasoning for wanting to be a part of this experience, list of internships, and career goals.
  • Students will be notified of their acceptance into either course by August 27th.
  • A short waitlist will be collected for each trip.
  • Scholarships may be available within Communication (speak with Heather Crespin) as well as CALS.
